For healthy, glowing skin, exfoliation is the key. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the skin’s surface to reveal new skin cells while unclogging pores and keeping skin clean. It is done after washing with a cleanser, and it not only treats your skin at the moment, but it helps prevent future breakouts and clogging of pores – if done on a regular basis.
Exfoliation can be harsh, especially on more sensitive skin, so it is usually not recommended every day. Rather, several times a week (non-consecutive days), is the best option to keep your skin healthy, but doesn’t overdo it and cause skin to become irritated or extremely dry.
Exfoliating also tends to dry your skin out, since exfoliating products usually have coarse ingredients and require a light “scrubbing” motion, to ensure the removal of dead skin cells and impurities. Due to this, it is extremely important to use a rich, oil-free moisturizer after you exfoliate. This will soothe the skin and help re-hydrate it.
Dermalogica has several exfoliation products, and they have tried to create a more gentle approach to exfoliating. Let’s go through some of them so you can determine which product is best for your skin:
Daily Microfoliant (also comes in travel-size!)
This unique, award-winning, rice-based enzyme powder creates bright and healthy skin with dramatically improved tone, texture and pigmentation. A blend of Green Tea, Ginkgo and Colloidal Oatmeal help calm inflammation and soothe the skin, leaving it extraordinarily clear and refreshed.
Given that this product is called a “microfoliant”, it is a fine-grained, soap-free exfoliant, formulated to polish away impurities, and is easy on delicate and irritation-prone skin. Dermalogica also reassures that because it is a more delicate and fine-grained exfoliator, it is gentle enough to use on a daily basis.
Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant not only creates smoother, softer skin, but it helps clear up and minimize the appearance of clogged pores, noticeably reduces skin flakiness and breakouts, and facilitates cell renewal. The result is clear, bright skin that feels soothed, smoothed and incredibly refreshed.
Dermalogica’s Gentle Cream Exfoliant uses Lactic and Salicyclic acids to slough off dead skin cells in a gentle, non-abrasive exfoliation. You can also use this product in a mask form, by applying it to the face, allowing it to try and then rinsing it off to reveal a healthy, supple appearance. Dermalogica recommends using this product once to twice a week, rather than daily.
Dermalogica’s Multi-Vitamin Thermafoliant is a powerful skin polisher that combines physical and chemical exfoliants to refine skin’s texture and enhance the penetration of age-fighting vitamins into skin. It gently warms on the skin, and uses resurfacing microgranules to gently polish off dulling skin cells to reveal smoother, fresher skin immediately.
Skin Prep Scrub
This scrub uses natural grains and Corn Cob Meal to exfoliate dead skin cells without over-stimulation. Botanicals soothe the skin, and after being exfoliated, skin is able to absorb moisturizing properties more easily. Besides being used on the face, this product can be combined with Special Cleansing Gel for a great shower exfoliate for the body. This is recommended to be used once a week.
