Preventing Fine Lines and Wrinkles

There’s a cliché that gets bandied about quite a bit when it comes to fighting fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of premature aging.

The best anti-aging treatment is prevention.

But clichés are often clichés for a reason – because they’re true.

Whether you’re in your twenties or early thirties, it’s never too early to start fighting the visible signs of aging. In fact, the earlier you start a good, targeted skin care regime, the longer you can put off those pesky little fine lines that give away your age just as readily as your driver’s license.

You’ve probably heard it before, but it bears repeating – the most effective anti-aging product on the market is a good sunscreen. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun break down elastin, which are fibers in the skin that help it retain its shape. With prolonged exposure to the sun, your skin can begin to stretch and sag, without the ability to snap back into place. Sun damage also leaves your skin more prone to brusing, tearing, and wrinkling.

Using a broad spectrum sunscreen every day can protect your skin from aging UV rays. The Bioelements SPF50 FaceScreen provides SPF 50 UVA/UVB protection to guard your skin against fine lines, wrinkles, elasticity loss and age spots. The moisturizing formula also contains antioxidants to fight free radical damage and skin-soothing ingredients like chamomile to help fortify the skin, so it’s ideal if you’re trying to head premature aging off at the pass.

After sunscreen, the best anti-aging treatment that you can introduce to your skin care regime in your twenties and thirties is retinol. Retinol helps stimulate collagen and elastin production deep within in the skin to make it look firmer and smoother, but it also helps remove dead, dull cells on the surface of the skin and encourage new cell growth to help keep your complexion smooth and glowing.

Retinol can be pretty irritating, though – redness, flaking and itchiness are all common side effects, so it’s not a good option if you have sensitive skin. Even if your skin isn’t sensitive, you should introduce it into your regime slowly. Use retinol products only in the evening, too, since it makes your skin more sensitive to sun damage. Start by applying a retinol product like gloTherapeutics Retinol CS every third night. If your skin doesn’t experience any irritation, you can increase your usage to every other night.

The final step to take in your twenties and thirties to avoid fine lines and wrinkles is to use an eye cream regularly. The skin around the eyes is extremely thin and delicate, so it’s usually the first area where fine lines and wrinkles pop up. Using an effective, moisturizing eye cream can help keep the area hydrated so fine lines are less likely to occur.

For a really potent option, though, try a moisturizing cream that also contains alpha hydroxy acid to help exfoliate dead skin cells so your under eye area stays smooth and line-free. Dermalogica Total Eye Care SPF15 is an ideal daily eye cream with alpha hydroxy acid to help fight fine lines – and its SPF15 guards the delicate eye area from the sun too for double protection against aging.
